Egypt seeks to export electricity to Syria and Iraq through the electricity interconnector with Jordan, which will see an increase in capacities in 2019, governmental sources told Al Borsa News.
The Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Resources began meeting with Jordanian officials to boost the capacity of the interconnector from 450 MegaWatt (MW) to 1,000 MW in the first phase and then will increase it to 2,000 MW to enable exports.
Egypt is currently negotiating to provide Syria and Iraq with 550 MW through the first phase and then increase it gradually during the second phase.
Increasing the capacity will automatically decrease electricity exchange prices by around 15%, the sources said, adding that Egypt earns around $20 million per year from exporting electricity to Jordan.
